How to Coloursmith Reader
Or, find the answer to your burning questions, right here:
-
Why Coloursmith?
Forget swatches, samples and forecasts… your life is already filled with colour—it’s everywhere! Coloursmith is a true celebration of colour, making you the master of your own trends and the creator of personalised colours you’ll love. And the best part? You can avoid a trip to the paint store by creating it right now, online or through the Coloursmith app!
-
Why no colour wall?
While colour walls certainly have their time and place, they can often be overwhelming and not overly helpful (or joyful!). Coloursmith is bringing the pleasure back to paint, by letting you skip the colour wall altogether and create beautiful, personal colour directly through your computer or smartphone.
-
What surfaces can I capture colour from?
Honestly? Anything! It could be as simple as a memorable holiday snap, as quirky as some smashed avo on toast, or as adventurous as the view from a mountain top. Some Coloursmiths are getting pretty creative, capturing colour from all sorts of wild and wonderful things… vases, pumpkins, snowboards, you name it! Honestly, there is no limit to the colours you can bring to life.
-
Do I need to download the app?
Not necessarily, you can capture colour directly through this website—on your computer or smartphone—by uploading an image of your choice or using your phone camera. However, if you want to increase colour accuracy with the Coloursmith Reader, you’ll need the app to connect with these devices.
-
Why can't I use my Coloursmith Window?
From June 2023 the Coloursmith Window will no longer be available to use or buy.
Over the years, we have found that the easiest way to create personal paint colour with Coloursmith is by taking a photo and uploading it to the app, or scanning a surface with the Coloursmith Reader. Discontinuing the Coloursmith Window is also better for the environment which is another reason for our decision.
Whilst your Window will no longer work, nothing else changes. Your Coloursmith app will still work and we have many exciting updates to come in 2023. If you have a Coloursmith account, all your colours will be saved even if they were created with a Window.
Thank you for your understanding and if you have any questions, please call Taubmans Customer Care on 131 686

What’s a Coloursmith Reader?
The Coloursmith Reader brings professional colour capturing to the people. Providing incredible precision, the Coloursmith Reader accurately captures colour using its own LED light source and a tri-stimulus XYZ sensor to ensure the closest colour match. Just connect, calibrate and capture—simple! Then order a sample pot to try your colour in your space.
-
Do I have to name my colour?
Not at all—your created colour will be assigned a unique QR code that you can use to order sample pots and full tins. But, honestly, it’s so fun to name your colour and really make it yours. And just think of the possibilities… why call something ‘bright pink’, when you can name it ‘Shiny Lip Gloss’ or ‘Cupcake Icing’?
-
Do I have to share my colour story?
No, that’s totally up to you. Your story is personal and whether you share it is 100% your choice. But if you should change your mind, sharing your colour story might inspire future Coloursmiths to create their own colours too.
-
Where can I get inspiration from?
The sky is the limit (seriously, you can create a sunset in a tin!). Coloursmith is all about looking around, and identifying what makes you happy… serene… content… energised… and then thinking about how you can infuse those feelings in your living spaces through colour. It’s all about you and what you really care about… so take a deep breath and start looking!
-
What if I don’t have ‘an eye’ for colour?
Honestly, there’s no such thing! Colour is for everyone—and everyone can be their own colour expert. That said, there’s a wealth of colour inspiration via our Instagram channel @coloursmithanz and Facebook page: that you can explore. And perhaps it’ll help you uncover some personal colour inspiration of your own.
-
I’ve never painted anything before, is that ok?
It’s never too late to get your paint on. In fact, it’s time to let go of whatever has been holding you back and give it a go… and because you can go from inspiration to paint all online, it’s super easy to get started with Coloursmith. Why not start with something small? A picture frame, a wooden stool, a bedroom door… have a go and let your creativity grow from there!
-
How accurate will my colour be?
The accuracy of your colour will depend on a few things… the clarity of the photograph you take, your screen calibration and the available light. However, to increase the accuracy of your colour match, try out the Coloursmith Reader with the app for better results.
-

-
How safe is the paint?
Many of our paint products are low in VOC and odour for maximum indoor air quality… however, it’s always a good idea when you're painting indoors to ensure good ventilation. Keep windows and doors open, and for extra air flow put a fan in the doorway to circulate fresh air from other parts of the house. For extra info, check out our product page.
-
How can I dispose of any unused paint?
Leftover paint must never be poured down the drain. Small amounts of unwanted paint can be brushed out on newspaper, allowed to dry and then disposed of via domestic waste collection. Drop off larger quantities of unused paint at your nearest Paintback collection site . Empty paint containers should be left open in a well-ventilated area to dry out. When dry, recycle steel containers via steel can recycling programs. Disposal of empty paint cans via domestic recycling may differ between local authorities. For exact details of how to recycle empty paint cans, check with your local council.
